Statement

Manchester Metropolitan University I believe stands out from every other university as it supplies each part of RIBA and also they have been rewarded the 2014 RIBA client of the year which is very important to my decisions in my university selection.  MMU and MSA have very engaging study paths that cover a huge variety of skills and qualifications to be successful, especially in Architecture. Also from visiting these two universities and spending time reviewing what is best for me it would be a great honour to work and learn with you.  As well as the benefits of using the facilities of both Universities, which is positioned in one of the UK’s most developed and continually growing cities. Therefore I feel it is very motivating and resourceful to study, while surrounded by years of different historic built environments as well as the brand new which ultimately shows the evolution and change of Architecture.

For me I find it very hard to choose a favourite piece of Architecture because every building has its own beauty and style but for me my hometown of Liverpool has a beautiful cityscape with many different styles of Architecture that contrast really well together which gives me a very strong feeling towards my home. A piece of Architecture that I admire is the Royal Liver Building.  This grade listed 1 building is special, which overlooks the River Mersey and it is an iconic symbol for Liverpool since the date of opening in 1911 which at the time was the tallest building in Europe which sparked the hype. The building itself is a mix in style as it is classic on the outside yet modern, with natural light being used very well on the inside with large open plan interiors that push the boundaries of contemporary and modern design. Today though, the Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool and is home to two famous Liver Birds that watch over the city and the sea. Plus legend has it that were these two birds to fly away, then the city would cease to exist so this is why this building is important to me because even though there are many other fantastic buildings and pieces of Architecture in Liverpool the Royal Liver Building never fails to amaze me because of its history and beauty.

In my personal statement I included a quote from Alvar Aalto who is a big inspiration now for me. However, an Architect who's work and projects that really stand out to me is Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe who was a German architect who was most well known for the creation of the Barcelona Pavilion which I believe is a striking figure and building that has changed modern architecture today due to the materials that have been used and the design itself, Tudgenhat House which is also a pioneer in modern day technology and Architecture with it being a 3 story house and being completely free standing and I believe the principle of this that Ludwig had is 'Less is More'. The Seagram Building is another building of his, this skyscraper in the New York City Skyline is used as an office and Is a functional aesthetic and a masterpiece of modernism and contemporary design. The point is though he wanted to find and establish a brand new architectural style for the world that could represent this era and modern day just like what classical and gothic architecture did for their times. So he created what I believe is the most influential twentieth century architectural style, known for beauty and simplicity therefore my reason to favour Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe because he didn't just do the ordinary he pushed the boundaries to seek further that no one else did in that time.

General Photography

Liverpool

This quick sketch and detailed drawing I did outside Liverpool's Catholic Cathedral commonly known as 'Paddy's Wigwam'
The next two sketches are from the Liverpool Central Library. The first is from the original drawing that I did on top of the library looking back at the glass roof and the Second is a detailed version that I did when I arrived home.

My last drawing is from a photo that I took inside the Liverpool library, it looks up at the great architecture and glass roof that was designed by the architect Austin-Smith:Lord.

London

This drawing of mine is from an original photo that I took in London of the London Eye.

This photo below is of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, I have also edited this photo to give the vintage effect.

My last photo from London is of the London Eye that I took on a river cruise, I used my DLSR to capture the colours that the sun and clouds created together and also a tilt-shift affect to create a centre focus and focal point on the Eye.

New York

This first drawing is of a photo that i took in New York when I visited.
This next piece I created by printing the New York skyline into copper and cutting it out before glueing newspaper down to the paper and painting over it with water colours so I could get the glossy and abstract affect.

The last New York piece of art is from a plain scratch paper that I bought, I copied a skyline photo and carved it into the the paper using a craft tool.
